Sustainability in the Fashion Industry

What is Sustainability?

Sustainability is the positive efforts of an individual or company, to reduce consumption of energy and materials that affects the economy, natural environment and society in a negative manner. The efforts made are to help the natural environment to continue thriving. Without any action done, the natural enviornment will cease to exist in the near future.

The rate of consumption has sky-rocketed the past couple of decades and because of this, there has been a significant
amount of negative impact to the natural environment and economy. More and more of the natural environment is
becoming obsolete due to us humans consuming all of the natural resources. The environment is also becoming a
wasteland with trash, pollution, and the more recent, oil spills. With so much consumption, the economy is
becoming worse with the rise in gas prices, food and clothing. With the current recession, affording these
necessities have become difficult.

To help reverse these affects, individuals and companies are practicing
sustainability. People are now taking precautions to help slow down
the consumption of our resources. Some steps taken are environmental
friendly cars that doesn’t use gas that causes pollution. Also instead
of using cars, people are using other means of transportation
such as bikes, walking or just working at home. People are starting to
recycle more products. Produce is starting to be organically grown
without the use of pesticides.

In the fashion industry, sustainability is being practiced with
the use of fabrics that are made organically or doesn’t need
dyeing. Another way of curbing production and consumption
is the purchasing of vintage clothing.
